Wither by Lauren Destefano (Review)

Genre: Dystopian
Number of Pages: 358
For ages 13+ for EXTREMELY limited sexual content

"What if you knew exactly when you would die?

Thanks to modern science, every human being has become a ticking genetic time bomb—males only live to age twenty-five, and females only live to age twenty. In this bleak landscape, young girls are kidnapped and forced into polygamous marriages to keep the population from dying out.

When sixteen-year-old Rhine Ellery is taken by the Gatherers to become a bride, she enters a world of wealth and privilege. Despite her husband Linden's genuine love for her, and a tenuous trust among her sister wives, Rhine has one purpose: to escape—to find her twin brother and go home.

But Rhine has more to contend with than losing her freedom. Linden's eccentric father is bent on finding an antidote to the genetic virus that is getting closer to taking his son, even if it means collecting corpses in order to test his experiments. With the help of Gabriel, a servant Rhine is growing dangerously attracted to, Rhine attempts to break free, in the limited time she has left." -Goodreads

So I read this book about a day after it was published.. yet I am just now reviewing it ;) Yeah. I haven't reviewed in a while and it makes me SAD! But anyways I AM BACK! WOOO!!!! Now, onto the review.

Wither by Lauren Destefano was a book with gorgeous writing. You can't really explain the writing but it was sort of rhythmic. It was like an un-rhyming poem. If you catch my drift, because right now I'm just rambling.

I have started to read more dystopian novels because they have become pretty popular. I wasn't sure I would actually like this book, but my mom told me it was good and usually she's right. (I SAID USUALLY!) But yes, this time my mother was right. That was kind of hard to type.. it took me a while.

I thought that once you got into the book it was REALLY good. I mean I couldn't even put that thing down. I read it in a day. No joke, and that was a school day. So as you can see in my point of view it was pretty amazing.

Rhine, the main character, was a character that you really did connect to in the book. It was pretty hard to think that at 16 she would get married and then by about 20 she would die. I loved going through the whole process with her in this book. Through out the book Rhine had to fight with herself. (Which in seventh grade we learned was self vs. self conflict. Yes, education has helped me in some way shape or form.)

I have to say Gabriel was NOT a swoon worthy boy character. *sniff, sniff* I didn't get the romance I necessarily wanted. I wish he could have been a little more charming. Then again, I have been pampered from books like, Anna and The French Kiss, The Liar's Society, etc. ;D Even though there wasn't a whole lot of romance going on it still was good. I JUST WANTED A SWOON WORTHY CHARACTER!

Some people may not agree with me on this one, and this is only for the people who have actually read the book, but I actually liked Rhine's husband Linden. I'm not going to go into anymore detail in risk of giving away spoilers.

The writing was AMAZING, the characters were great, and it was an all the way good story line. I just wish I could have gotten a little more romance. But you know me, I am a little demanding in that area of books. ;)

I give this book 4 out of 5 diva crowns. I would have given it 5 if Gabriel was a little more charming but, as in the wise words of Yo Gabba Gabba, "You can't always get what you want."

I love your review. Each one you do keeps getting better & better. I especially liked where you said you had a hard time typing that your mom was right and that your education had SOME value. ;)

Sorry you didn't get to swoon in this one. Maybe the next book you read.
